Betty Jean Sargen

Betty Jean Sargen, 93, beloved mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother, of Elizabethtown, passed away on January 16, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 12, 1923 in Middletown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Amanda Landis Houser and Norman Houser. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 56 years, George Henry Sargen (“Carpy”), a sister Ruth Umpierre and brother, Norman Houser.  She is survived by two children, Norman Sargen and Lisa Heilner (Gerald), grandchildren Isaac Greene and Sarah Miller, and cherished niece, Jeanne Umpierre Maines and four great-grandchildren.   

She was a 1941 graduate of Middletown HIgh School. One of the last survivors of her graduating class, she served the alumni group as secretary and attended each reunion. During WWII and the later forties, she drove an ambulance for the former Olmstead Air Force base. After raising her children she worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Camp Hill, retiring at age 68. A voracious reader, she read two newspapers daily and remained highly cognizant of local and national news. She loved her flower gardens and visits from friends and relatives. All who knew her will long remember her generosity and optimism. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown. 

A celebration of her life will be held on January 23 at 11:00AM at Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home, 130 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022, with Pastor David Woolverton officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
