Charles Jackson Obituary

Charles P. Jackson, 81, of Bainbridge and formerly of Elizabethtown, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 14, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital.  Born Tuesday, July 28, 1936 in Hollidaysburg, PA, he was the son of the late George L. “Lou” and Dorothy (Hoover) Jackson.  He was married to Elaine K. (Merrifield) Jackson  May 25, 1958

Mr. Jackson was an active member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren since 1959. Among his involvements were deacon, chair of the Board, Teacher, and class member.

Education: Chuck received his M.S. in Mathematics at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He received his B.S. in Secondary Education at Lock Haven University with a mathematics major in 1959. He graduated from Hollidaysburg School District in 1954.

Employment: Charles was Computer Systems Analyst, Pennsylvania Department of Education, Harrisburg 1980-2001. He was Applications Programmer/Analyst at Pennsylvania State University, Capital Campus, Middletown 1977-1980. He taught courses in FORTRAN and Statistical Computing while at PSCC. Chuck was part-time Programmer/Analyst at Elizabethtown College 1974-1980.   Jackson was Director of Data Processing 1969- 1974 and a Mathematics teacher 1959–1974 at Elizabethtown Area  School District (EASD). Dean Kreamer and he were co-coaches when the wrestling program began at EASD in 1959. Later Chuck was head coach. One year he was the head coach at Hollidaysburg School District (With State Champ, Wade Schalles) and another year he coached wrestling at Stevens Trade. Charles helped with Elizabethtown Boys Club Wrestling about 14 years where he served as head coach. Jackson served as President of the Donegal Area Church Softball League and pitched on the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren team, several Senior Softball leagues, and more. He was a member of Conoy Lions and on the Conoy Recreation Committee. Other hobbies included Lions Club, reading, badminton, horseshoes, pickleball, senior games, and watching television sports.

In addition to his loving wife of over 59 years, he is survived by 2 daughters, Charlaine K. “Charlie” Gibble and companion, John McDermott, III of Lancaster and Rachel E. Jackson and companion, Mike Sauble, of Columbia.  Also surviving are his grandchildren, Ashley Horst, wife of Aaron Horst of Elizabethtown, Kate Wert, wife of Tony Wert of Lancaster and Stephen Mc Dermott of Lititz.  His surviving siblings are Don Jackson of Hollidaysburg, Jeannie Glass of East Freedom, Carol Walters of Duncansville and Jerry & sister-in-law, Kitty Jackson of Hollidaysburg, and sister-in-law Pat Jackson of Portage.   He was preceded in death by a son, Steven C. Jackson, August 8, 1980. He also was preceded in death by his siblings Shirley and her spouse, Chuck Salyards of Duncansville, Philip Jackson of Portage and brother-in-law Wilford Walters of Duncansville.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 South Mount Joy Street, Elizabethtown, PA  17022.  There will be a time of visitation from 10 AM until the time of the service. Private interment was in the Elizabethtown Mennonite Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted with the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA  17022, 717-367-1543.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren Building Fund or Elizabethtown Boys Club Wrestling.
