Dorothy Lillian (Itter) Gerhart, 92, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2017 in the Masonic Village. She was born Saturday, December 6, 1924 in Hazleton to the late Arthur H., Sr. and Mary Ann (Hess) Itter. She was predeceased by her loving husband Reverend Mervin S. Gerhart in 2013.
Dorothy graduated from Hazleton High School in 1942 and went on to graduate from Hazleton State Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She was a Registered Nurse working in both general duty and private nursing in the Hazleton State Hospital and in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster. Dorothy participated in the Harvard Medical School Affiliated Nurses Health Study for over 40 years. Dorothy was a faithful member of Christ Church United Church of Christ. Her hobbies included crocheting, reading, and traveling. Most importantly Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
She is survived by 3 sons, Kenneth and wife Kay, Leigh and wife Geralyn, and Paul and wife Lori; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 2 siblings, Arthur Itter, Jr. and Ann Wagner. She was predeceased by 2 siblings, Gertrude Lowe and Margaret Itter.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 11 AM at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown 17022 with Rev. Dr. Galen E. Russell, III officiating. Burial will follow the service in Tulpehocken Trinity Cemetery, Richland. Family and friends are invited for viewing on Sunday, February 19th from 6-8 PM at Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N. Market St., Elizabethtown 17022.
