 John F. Kendig, Major USAF Retired

John Freymeyer Kendig, 86, of Lititz, passed away with family by his side on January 7, 2016 at Moravian Manor.  He was born Tuesday, July 2, 1929 to the late John A. Kendig and Roberta F. (Freymeyer) Kendig.  He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Anne M. Kendig.

John was born and raised in Salunga, PA.  He was a graduate of Elizabethtown College (BS Chemistry 1951) and the University of Kansas in Lawrence (MS Radiation Biophysics 1961).  He was a Certified Radiation Biophysicist.  He proudly served 20 years in the United States Air Force initially as a navigator in the Korean War, and then as a radiation biophysicist in the USAF Medical Service Corps, attaining the rank of Major before his retirement in 1971.    He subsequently worked for the US Public Health Service and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission until retirement in 1991.  His career provided numerous uniquely challenging experiences including a role as a first responder for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at the Three Mile Island partial meltdown on March 28, 1979.  He enjoyed his life with his family, residing in and visiting many areas of the United States, as well as traveling abroad with his wife Anne.  He especially looked forward to his time with his grand children.  He resided at the Moravian Manor Retirement Community with his wife, and attended St. James Catholic Church in Lititz.

He is survived by two children:  Patricia Anne Eldred and husband Wesley of Burlington, Vermont, and John W. Kendig and wife Laurie of Prosper, Texas.  He is also survived by three grandchildren:  Jennifer Lauren Eldred of Williston, Vermont, Amanda Paige Kendig of Dallas, Texas and John Albert Kendig of Prosper, Texas.  He was predeceased by his sister Vivian Jean Kendig.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church in Lititz.  Interment to follow at 12:30 PM in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home and Crematory, 130 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Moravian Manor Retirement Community Benevolent Fund, 300 Lemon St., Lititz, PA 17543.
