Mary Ann (Schaeffer) Pickell Goodling

Mary A. Pickell Goodling, 98, of Columbia passed away peacefully surrounded by her family June 18, 2016. She was the wife of the late Ralph Pickell who died in 1973 and the late Earl Goodling who died in 2004. Born in Rapho twp., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Maude (Hair) Schaeffer.

Mary was one of the original employees for Jim Herr’s Potato Chips in 1947. She worked at the Mennonite Home as a nurse’s aid and took in washing and ironing in her early years. Mary attended God’s Missionary Church in Salunga. She played the banjo in the Simmons All Girl Orchestra and also played the accordion. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Camp Freedom Florida. She enjoyed embroidering and crocheting. Her favorite activity was canning and cooking great meals for her family.

Surviving are a son: Kenneth R. Pickell, husband of Theresa (Omlor) Pickell; a daughter Dorothy (Pickell) Herr, wife of John Herr; four step-children, sixteen grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren and a brother, Warren Schaeffer, husband of Delores of Mount Joy.

Mary was predeceased by three brothers: Paul, Ralph and Raymond Schaeffer; a sister Ethel Garman, a grandson Kenny Pickell, a step-son, two step-daughters and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 24, 2016 at God’s Missionary Church, 38 Holland Street, Salunga at 10:30AM. Viewing will be on Thursday at Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown from 6:00-8:00 PM and on Friday at the church from 9:30 until the time of service. Interment will take place in Creswell Cemetery.
