Wilbur H. “Jack” Hornafius, Jr., 90, of Elizabethtown, passed away at his home in Mount Joy Township, on Thursday, October 19, 2017.  Born Thursday, June 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Wilbur H. Hornafius, Sr. and Mary (Wolgemuth) Hornafius.

Jack’s primary interests were keeping up with his extended family, serving his community, and a deep love of classical music, opera, and musicals which he passed on to his children.  He was a Rotarian for 65 years and past president of the Elizabethtown’s Rotary Club, Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Little Theatre, Area Music Foundation, and Public Library.  He was past president of the Library System of Lancaster County and a director of the Community Gallery of Lancaster County and Music at Gretna.  He also served as secretary of the Elizabethtown Building & Loan Association and the Chamber of Commerce.

A well-known businessman in town, he owned Hornafius Insurance Agency, Hornafius Travel, and Hornafius Real Estate.  In his retirement, he worked for 23 years in the Box Office of the Giant Center, fondly known there as “Jack in the Box”.  He was still working 3 days a week up until his death.

A Veteran of WWII, Jack served with the U.S. Navy as their “last sail maker” since he was the only sailor on his first day on the ship brave enough to admit to being able to sew.

He is survived by three children: Scott Hornafius of Centennial, CO; Carrie Freeman of Kennett Square, PA; and Holly Flynn of Valrico, FL.  He was a grandfather of 6: Scott and Bradley Freeman, Kayla Hornafius Henley, Hayley Hornafius, and Shea and Casey Flynn.  He was also lucky enough to welcome his 1st great-grandson, Remy Henley, into the world. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Marvin of Berkeley Heights, NJ and 3 nephews.

In keeping with Jack’s wishes, private services and interment was at the convenience of the family.  Arrangements have been entrusted with the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA  17022.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jack’s honor to the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 South Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA  17022.
