William G. Atherton, 97, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Masonic Village. He was born on Friday, March 28, 1919 in Wellsboro, to the late Edward and Nina (Gleason) Atherton. He was married to Mary M. (Eckinger) Atherton for over 70 years until her passing on January 1, 2007.
A Veteran of WWII, Bill proudly served his country with the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served 18 months in the South Pacific on Ship #FS220. He was also the proud recipient of two bronze stars.
In his earlier years, he worked as a parts manager for Ulrich Chevy, Elizabethtown and retired from the former Petticoffer Dodge, Elizabethtown.
He is survived by a son-in-law, Walter J. Stoner and wife, Barbara, of Middletown; two grandchildren; Tracy Homer and husband, Tony, of Eden; Lester Stoner and wife, Kathy of North Carolina as well as two great grandchildren, Penny and Riley and a step-great grandson, Tommy. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary A. Stoner.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, May 2, 2016 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 East High Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022, with the Reverend A.J. Domines, Jr., and Reverend Fred Keller officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Tunnel Cemetery, Elizabethtown, with full military honors. There will be a time of visitation at the church from 10 AM until the time of the service on Monday. Arrangements have been entrusted with the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N.
