Alexandra “Sandy” Spayd, 68, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Sunday, November 11th at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy. Born in Bridgeport PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Sarabun) Shewchuk, and was the youngest of four sisters. She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 46 years, Ralph E. Spayd, Jr and her family.
Sandy worked as a registered nurse, and was the Director of Health Services at Elizabethtown College. She retired in 2012 after 30 years of service to the College. She was an active member at Christ Church United Church of Christ, and was active in her community through the Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care and served as the President of the Board of Directors. In her free time Sandy and her husband enjoyed scuba diving, especially in Cozumel, bicycling, and sailing. Sandy enjoyed her flower gardens and sharing gardening tips with her sisters. She also spent many hours in “spirited” games of canasta with her sisters to determine who would be the canasta queen. She took pride in raising her family and adored her grandchildren. One hobby she was especially good at was making beautiful Ukranian Easter eggs called Pysanka, creating traditional Ukranian folk designs with wax and dyes. Christmas eve was always a special occasion celebrating the Ukranian tradition Sviatyi Vechir (Holy Evening) with her family. Sandy has passed on those family tradition to her sons and grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Sandy is survived by her sons Edward (wife Ali) grandchildren Josie and Luka. Joseph (wife Kelli) and granddaughter Maddie.
