Alfred “Gene” Bevel, 73, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2019 surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Born January 8, 1946 in Dickenson County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Bruce and Callie Bevel. He was the foster son of the late Pearl Smith, the late Troy & Ada Salyers and the late Maston & Mary Rose. Gene was the husband of Kathy (Abreu) Bevel with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage on September 3, 2018.
Gene attended Ervinton and Clintwood High Schools and moved to Alexandria, VA in 1964. He met his wife in Alexandria in 1966 and they moved to Elizabethtown in 1968. He worked for National Bearing Company for 27 years and retired from J.L. Clark in 2008.
Gene was involved with Boy Scouts for many years. He loved hunting, fishing and going to his camp at Bobby’s Run in Cameron County. Gene’s favorite pastime was fixing things and more recently, enjoyed checking Google and YouTube for ideas and hints. He was a loyal friend to many as well as a mentor and father figure to the Abreu and Kyles families.
In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by 4 sons: Tony, Darrell, John, and Michael (Becki); 5 grandchildren: Brendan, Ashlyn, Cameron, Lauren, and Jaiden; a brother: Roger Frank; 3 sisters: Betty Green, Lois Rose, and Patty Smith (Steve). He was also survived by many foster brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Bevel.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, July 1, 2019 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 904 Mill Road, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 with Reverend Bernard Oniwe officiating. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family. A time of visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of the service on Monday.
