Welcome to the memorial page for

Donald "Skip" James Sterling, Jr.

October 1, 1951 ~ November 14, 2017 (age 66) 66 Years Old

Donald J. “Skip” Sterling, Jr., 66, of Lancaster passed from this life to the next, now fully in God’s care on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Donald J. Sterling, Sr., and Virginia (Wilson) Sterling. He spent the past 42 years with his loving wife, Lynne (Wolford) Sterling.

He grew up in the Harrisburg area, graduating from Susquehanna High School, class of 1969. He went on to earn a B.A. in English from Juniata College, class of 1973, and his Masters in English from Penn State in 1980.

He honed his technical writing skills at the former AMP, Inc. His career path later led him to Godfrey Advertising in Lancaster. In 2006 he then became co-founder and president of SNR Advertising, a business to business ad agency, a move which he found very fulfilling.

Don was a published author, having written five textbooks for trade schools and for AMP salesmen, on technical subjects such as fiber optics, premises cabling, and industrial ethernet networking.  Being an English major and author, no paper of his daughter’s made it out of the house without a thorough proof read and edit from Dad. So, writing about his life on his behalf…no pressure…

He had a lifelong love of books, and had amassed an extensive home library spanning a wide range of subjects, and had kept a record of every book he had read.

His passion for reading was rivaled by his love of music. He was an aficionado on the history of Blues and Rock genres. Skip was also a most studied fan of Bob Dylan’s work, as anyone who knew him knows.

In his youth he was active in the Boy Scouts, especially enjoying camping, hiking, and attending national jamborees across the country. He attained the level of Eagle Scout.

He enjoyed traveling with his family, going to Central America and Europe several times, among other places. Skip also enjoyed kayaking with Lynne, walking their dogs, attending concerts, and simply being together. He will be remembered as being a devoted husband and father. We are left to cherish his memory, always and forever.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Megan Waters & husband Brian, sister Cynthia Sterling, sister-in-law Ann Rampulla & husband John, and two nephews, Alex & Evan Young, as well as numerous cousins and extended family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10AM on Monday, November 20, 2017 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603 with the Rev. Dr. Barbara J. Seras officiating. Burial will be private in Duncannon Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022. 717-367-1543

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his church at the address above or to an animal rescue of your choice.
