Stewart W. Robinson

After a life well lived,Stewart W. Robinson,96,passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021.
He was born in March of 1925, one of 16 children of the late Carrie Watts and Daniel H. Robinson and preceded in death by brothers and sisters  Stanley,Paul,Agnes,Dwight,Hope,Doris,Gene,Hurley,Helen,Glen,Arvin,Ina and Carol.

In August of 1946, he married Marian Hoover with whom he shared a devoted union of 69 years until her passing in 2015.

Stewart was raised in Harrisburg,PA,graduated from Susquehanna High School and retired from Bethlehem Steel. He was a 50 year member of the Brownstone Masonic Lodge in Hershey,and also a member of the Harrisburg Zembo Shriners,Fishburn Church and Gravel Hill United Methodist Church.
Most importantly he was a member of the Greatest Generation having served aboard the USS Hornet,one of the most decorated ships of WWII.
The Hornet, with Stu aboard, left Pearl Harbor on March 15, 1944 in route to the forward area. Her combat debut as the flagship of Admiral J.J. "Jocko" Clark came quickly as she joined famed Task Force 58. For the next 18 months, HORNET would never tie-up at a pier. For fourteen of those months, HORNET would be in the most forward areas of the Pacific war -- sometimes within 40 miles of the Japanese home islands.   
In 18 months of combat operations HORNET was under heavy attack 59 times but was never hit by a single bomb, torpedo, or Kamikaze! HORNET's air groups and ship's guns shot down 668 Japanese planes and destroyed another 747 on the ground, and were credited with 73 ships sunk, 37 probable and 413 damaged.  
As a result of his WW2 service, Stu and the Hornet crew earned 11 battle stars and two presidential unit citations, for extraordinary heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces.  Additionally, Stu received the Asiatic Pacific Victory Medal.
Stu loved God,his family, hymn singing,sharing cookies with the family dogs,pinochle,sports with trophies won for bowling,tennis,golf,baseball and shuffleboard,reading and anything cooked or baked by his wife but especially her lemon meringue pie.
Humble,honest,generous and gregarious by nature he will be remembered for his kindness,sense of humor,unconditional love,work ethic,strong belief in doing the right thing and willingness to help anyone in need. Stu’s passionate views on everything taught us to love deeply and never take oneself too seriously. He would bid you goodbye with “God loves you and so do I.”
He is survived by his sisters Shirley and Alice,children Kent,Gregory and SuAnne,grandchildren Gregory,Brett,Shelle and Shane and 7 great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 11:30AM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville with full military honors.
